RESEARCH NOTE: A study (reported in the August 2003 International Journal of Toxicity) compared mercury levels in first cut hair of normal children with and children diagnosed with autism. To the researchers surprise it found that autistic children had a significantly lower level of mercury in their hair than did normal children, despite their having been matched for similar exposure to mercury (which included maternal diet and vaccinations) as the non- autistic group. This study seems to indicate several things:

bulletIn the autistic individual there may be difficulties keeping the mercury at more superficial levels, such as hair, skin, muscles, or blood
bulletThat in autistic mercury had easy access or entry to the brain, possibly due to a weakness of the blood brain barrier.
bulletA compromised blood brain barrier would allow mercury to concentrate in the brain
bulletIf mercury were to concentrate in the brain, it would make sense that mercury would be found in lower levels in the hair of autistic children - also in blood.

The above study points out the limitations in using traditional medical diagnostic testing as a sole determiner of the presence of toxicity.

Laboratory blood analysis - Is not useful in identifying toxins at levels deeper than Level 3. They can not determine if toxins are in the brain.

Urine Tests - tests urine for the presence of toxins present in the urine. Can not tell if toxins are deeper than level three or are in the brain.

Hair analysis - A sample of hair is evaluated for the presence of toxins, such as heavy metals. Will only show the toxins that have specific affinity for hair cells. Does not give a total picture of toxicity, in particular neuro-toxicity, which occurs at a level that is deeper than hair.

Muscle (or reactive leg length) testing - In the hands of a skilled practitioner, can be the most effective way to determine if toxicity present. Can also determine if the toxicity is allergic in nature, a sensitivity, or a poison. Unlike other methods of testing, it can determine the level the toxicity is present on. Its drawback in that muscle testing is an art. Skill level can vary greatly from one practitioner to another.
